After 33 years as a successful architect and surviving two of the deepest recessions since the Great Depression, Joseph Matthew still marvels at living his dream.

"In my high-school graduation class, I had friends who went on to careers in medicine and law; no one but me wanted to be an architect," Matthew says. "I had never seen an architect, talked to one, or met one. But I had read about architects in books. It was truly a dream."

Matthew left his native Montserrat in the Caribbean in 1967 to attend Howard University, the prominent black university in Washington, DC, known for producing legendary leaders and path breakers. After graduating, Matthew went to Canada in 1973.
